About Us

The Preston Park School Old Girls’ Association holds well attended Reunions each year and have held special Reunions in Guild Years.

Although the Park School, Preston’s grammar school for girls, closed in 1969, our association has over 400 Old Girls and former members of staff on our mailing list.

In our Centenary Year, 2007, 411 Old Girls attended the reunion at Barton Grange, travelling from all parts of the country and abroad. The morning after we held a Church Service at Preston Minster, formerly Preston Parish Church of St John, with over 450 Old Girls and friends in attendance including the Mayor.

We produce and send out a newsletter each year which includes letters from Old Girls who have taken time to write and share their memories of Park School days; many friendships have been renewed through this contact.
We always welcome letters and e-mails from Old Girls for the newsletter.

If you wish to be included on the mailing list to receive the latest Old Girls' Association news and annual newsletter please contact the Honorary Secretary, Lynne Cowperthwaite (nee Lavender at school 1961-1968) and give your name /maiden name/ years at school / address /email address /and phone number and you will then be added to mailing list.

2015 Questionnaire

Thank you to everyone who returned the 2015 questionnaire regarding the timing and venue of our annual reunion.
This was sent to all members and there was an excellent response.
There was a clear majority for returning to Barton Grange after the unavoidable absence and also for holding the gathering at lunchtime rather than the evening.
Therefore the 2016 Annual Reunion will take place at Barton Grange Hotel on Friday 7th October 2016 at 12noon for 12.30pm.
On Saturday 8th there will be the usual Coffee Morning, 10.30am until 12noon, and this too will be at Barton Grange Hotel.
Full details and booking form for both these events are being sent to all paid up Members of the Association.

Old Girls' Reunion, 11th October and Coffee Morning 12th October 2013

The Friday Reunion was a really enjoyable occasion with 74 Old Girls attending.
Elizabeth Smithies our Chairman welcomed everyone and read out messages from Ruth Seed our President and Florence Kirkby who taught at the Park School, both of whom could not be with us.
The buffet supper was delicious and there was plenty laughter and chatter. Great interest was shown in the memorabilia display too.

It was good to see the 1959s who also meet regularly throughout the year for walking and lunching, organised by Sylvia Porter now Wilson and previously by Halldora Ingham.
The 1949ers were there, always great supporters every year, organised by Lillian Thomas now Aldridge. Diana Pember came all the way from Germany as usual. The 49ers meet for a luncheon at Preston Golf Club on the Saturday after the Coffee Morning, every year. If any 49er wants to join them, get in touch with the Secretary Lynne Cowperthwaite and you will be given Lillian’s contact number.
Most years were represented with seven of 1961 girls sharing a table with 1964/5 and 6. It was good to have Alison Blaikie (now Ribush) 1965-1972 with us as she was over from Australia for the week. She was delighted to meet up with Ann Pilling (now Law) and Christine Hardy (now Heap), both 1965s.
Every decade from the 1940s to 1960s was well represented.
Old Girls travelled from their homes throughout the country and Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

The Coffee Morning on the Saturday was well attended with around 60 Old Girls and friends enjoying meeting up again. The Preston Grammar School Old Boys’ Association President John Whalley and the Secretary Charlie Billington joined us as usual

Old Girls' Reunion, 7th September 2012

This Guild Reunion was a great success and 327 Old Girls attended. Once again the Park School Old Girls took over the whole of the Barton Grange Hotel. There were Old Girls from all over the UK and abroad… Australia, Canada, America, France, Germany, Vienna and Ireland.
Our Chairman Elizabeth Smithies welcomed everyone and Ruth Seed who has become our President said Grace.
After the excellent buffet supper Elizabeth proposed the Toast to Her Majesty the Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh.
Miss Vera Young who was on the Staff of the Park School, proposed the Toast to the Old Girls’ Association and Ruth Seed briefly responded. This left plenty time for everyone to talk to each other. So many Old Girls have emailed or written to say how much they enjoyed the evening and meeting up with old friends, some they may not have seen for over 40years.
The Coffee Morning on Saturday attracted over 120 Old Girls, husbands, friends and Preston Grammar School Old Boys amongst them. We appreciated the presence of John Whalley, President of the Old Boys’ Assoc and Charlie Billington the Secrertary of the Old Boys’ Assoc.
At both occasions we had our display of memorabilia from school days and previous Guild Year involvements.
Jean Marsh nee Studholme 1946-1953, gave us the dress which she wore in the 1952 Guild procession as one of the Ladies walking behind Queen Elizabeth 1st. This scene was made up of Park School Girls. The dress went on our display which was of great interest to everyone it is in perfect condition, still deeply coloured fuschia pink with light blue lining and trim.
We had a CD of our Old Photographs on continuous play throughout the evening.

Ian Topping, MD of Barton Grange Hotel, and his staff made the evening work perfectly, every detail was looked after and they received many compliments.

Andy and Mick Wilson of Stanley Road Film and Media, arranged an audio link between the rooms so everyone could hear the proceedings and the Toasts. They also updated our CD photograph archive which will also be on the website soon.

Old Girls' Reunion, 19th October 2007

The Centenary Reunion of the Park School Old Girls' Association took place on Friday October 19th at The Barton Grange Hotel.

416 Old Girls had a great time chatting and finding friends from, in some cases, at least 50 years ago.

The evening began with the welcome by the Chairman, Elizabeth Smithies and included the cutting of a beautiful cake made by Dolores Harry, nee Hall, the school song and an excellent buffet supper.

The after-dinner speaker, Miss Florence Kirkby, entranced everyone with her memories of The Park School, the Headmistress, Staff and pupils.

Miss Kirkby spoke fluently and amusingly for 20 minutes with no prompt or notes! Thereafter people mingled and chatted until the early hours.

Ian Topping, MD of Barton Grange Hotel, and his staff made the evening work perfectly and received many compliments.

The Church Service at The Minster on Saturday morning was attended by over 450 Old Girls, husbands and friends and the Mayor and her Consort honoured The Old Girls' Association with their presence.

The service was planned by Elizabeth Smithies, Ruth Seed, nee Naylor, and the Vicar, Father Timothy Lipscomb. Ruth, who is a Reader, preached the sermon. Father Timothy and the staff at The Minster helped to make this service a memorable end to the Centenary Weekend.
